Here are the Old Testament scriptures that form the background for the events of the Passion Week:
Zechariah 9:
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter
of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is
just,
and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass,
and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Isaiah 53:
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant,
and as a root
out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised
and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it
were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our
sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded
for our transgressions, he
was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was
upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have
gone astray; we have turned every
one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity
of us all.
7 He was oppressed,
and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought
as a lamb
to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and
who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of
the living: for the transgression of my people
was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death; because
he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 ¶ Yet it pleased the Lord
to bruise
him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering
for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days, and the pleasure
of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and
shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant
justify
many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion
with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath
poured out his soul unto death:
and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of
many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 6:
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand
not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart
of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut
their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and
understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed
Isaiah 56:
7 Even them will I bring to
my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall
be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house
shall be called an house of prayer for all
people.
Psalm 78:
1 Give ear,
O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable:
I will utter dark sayings of old:
Deuteronomy 6:
5 And thou shalt love
the Lord thy God with all thine heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Leviticus 19:
8 ¶ Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge
against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself: I am
the Lord.
Zechariah 11:
12 And I said unto
them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they
weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
Psalm 41:
9 Yea, mine own
familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my
bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psalm 69:
20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am
full of heaviness:
and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for
comforters, but I found none.
Isaiah 50:
6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to
them that plucked off the hair: I hid
not my face from shame and spitting.
Psalm 22:
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly
of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced
my hands and my feet.
Psalm. 22:
18 They part my garments among
them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
Psalm 22:
7 All they that
see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted
on the Lord that he would deliver him: let
him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
Psalm 22:
1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken
me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the
words of my roaring?
Ex. 12:
46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not
carry forth ought
of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone
thereof.
Num. 9:
12 They shall leave none of it unto the morning,
nor break any
bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.
